Ruhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi, Vice President for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy, last year and in the first months of his appointment as the President’s Vice President for Science, learned about this vice president’s plan to create 10 billion-dollar startups or so-called “unicorns” in the next three years. had been given.

He is now talking to the news agency stamp has announced that three special programs have been considered for the creation of these mega-companies, which are generally based on putting together small companies to form a mega-company:

“In order to realize this issue, three programs are on the agenda; The first program is the creation and follow-up of Pishran projects. We have defined 26 mega-projects in the Scientific Vice-Chancellor until now, and the implementation of these projects is generally based on the placement of several companies together; Because the super company is created when several small companies come together.

The Scientific Vice-Chancellor is advancing these programs while in December 1401, when Dehghani Firouzabadi announced the creation of 10 Iranian unicorns within the next three years, many activists and experts in this field considered this idea impractical.

Mohammad Mehdi Shariatmadar, the former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fintech Association, explained in an interview with Zomit that in the future, even beyond startups, it is not very possible for all knowledge-based companies to have 10 unicorn startups in the next three years.

He also explained the reasons for his claim as follows: “First of all, due to security and social issues these days, the country’s economic and investment environment is generally challenged, and secondly, there is the issue of the falling rate of the dollar value, which makes any business “If it moves forward, its dollar or international value will drop significantly every year.”

Despite this, the Scientific Vice President is still pursuing this project. In this regard, the scientific deputy of the president has explained that for the formation of Iranian unicorns, platforms are necessary that must be provided:

“In order to create mega-companies, we need three platforms, which are large supports under the title of propulsion projects, projects of devices and large industries, and support for a special export line. These three programs are lined up as the biggest tools we have. These tools automatically encourage groups to come together and work in a consortium, and this is the starting point of supercorporation.”

The vice president of science, technology and knowledge-based economy has explained that by providing these platforms, in order to advance the considered programs, “these companies must become the technology giants of the country to move other knowledge-based companies and startups.”

He further announced that some agreements have been concluded with major institutions of the country, such as oil, agriculture and petrochemicals, in the legal context of the jump in production. The purpose of concluding these agreements is for these institutions to provide their resources to this program to solve the problem.

Dehghani Firouzabadi further added: “For example, an agreement was made with the Ministry of Oil for 15 items of equipment. “These are big projects that must be put together in order to be implemented.”

Referring to the third program, the scientific deputy of the president also explained that in foreign relations, according to the conditions of the country, the scientific deputy seeks to create joint companies with foreign partners, where the identity of the participants in those companies is the identity of a consortium, and in Foreign markets become a share.

Considering the progress of many neighboring countries and the Middle East region in terms of forming unicorns and generating a lot of income with these companies and startups, it seems necessary for us in Iran to create and launch one billion dollar companies.

Experts predicted at the beginning of this year that by 2030, the size of the digital economy market in the Middle East and North Africa region will reach 500 billion dollars. By the end of 2022, this region, which already has 6 one-billion-dollar startups (unicorns), is set to jump in seven years and the number of unicorns will reach 250.

This is despite the fact that our country still does not have a unicorn, and as a result, it cannot have a large share of this market. The lack of domestic capital, the impossibility of attracting foreign investment, Internet restrictions and other obstacles that have stood in the way of the digital economy have made having an Iranian unicorn still a dream.
