With Samsung’s LEDoS technology, the display quality of future augmented reality headsets will increase

Samsung Display confirmed this week that it has started developing its LEDoS display technology for augmented reality devices. These panels will be used in the next generation of augmented reality headsets that will be released in the coming years. The goal of the South Korean tech giant is for LEDoS to offer the same quality as OLEDoS with fewer limitations.

LEDoS panels will be produced based on silicon microLEDs, unlike OLEDoS displays which are based on organic light emitting diodes on a silicon panel.

Samsung explained at the Deep Tech 2023 event that OLEDoS panels have limitations in terms of lifespan and brightness. The Samsung Display unit plans to make LEDoS panels based on microLED to overcome the mentioned limitations in addition to maintaining OLEDoS quality.

In March, Samsung and South Korea’s Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced progress in making microLED displays. This technology allows Samsung to produce small, high-resolution microLED-based panels for augmented reality headsets and other wearable products.

By changing the epitaxial structure of microLEDs, KAIST researchers realized that it is possible to prevent the decrease in efficiency and reduce the heat produced in microLED displays by 40%.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset, introduced last month, uses OLEDoS display technology, but Samsung and LG do not produce such panels. In fact, it seems that the Vision Pro display is made by Sony, and the production capacity of this company is less than one million units per year.

Apple, which is used to selling millions of its products, is currently looking to the future to increase the sales of Vision Pro. Apparently, the company plans to select Samsung Display and LG Display as display suppliers for its mixed reality headset in the near future, which could coincide with the start of production of Samsung’s LEDoS displays.

Samsung is also developing its own mixed reality headset, which is expected to launch next year as a more affordable alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro.
