Microsoft’s AIM is not very similar to ordinary computers because it does not use bits or bytes to process data and perform calculations. Of course, this system has shown its potential to surpass advanced silicon-based digital technology or even the most powerful quantum computers.

Microsoft says AIM is built using optoelectronics technology that is inexpensive and scalable. In fact, this solution works based on an asynchronous data flow architecture that does not require data exchange between the storage and computing units.

Although AIM is not designed for general-purpose computing tasks, Microsoft says the analog optical computer is useful for solving the difficult optimization problems at the heart of many math-intensive industries, including finance, logistics, transportation, energy, healthcare and manufacturing.
