In the shadow of sanctions, China is now making the world’s most advanced 3D NAND memory

Memory made by YMTC quietly made its way into a new SSD that was made available to Chinese users a few months ago. The construction of this memory shows that YMTC has been able to continue to grow in the shadow of American sanctions.

YMTC’s historic achievement is recorded while TechInsights experts confirmed some time ago that Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro uses a 7nm processor. The processor of that phone was produced by SMIC (China’s largest chip maker). The construction of the Chinese seven-nanometer processor surprised many analysts.

TechInsights experts say that recent developments show that China’s efforts to bypass sanctions and strengthen its domestic chip industry have been more successful than expected.

3D NAND memory is very important in processing heavy tasks such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, and even enters consumer SSD drives. Making the most advanced 3D NAND memory chip is undoubtedly a significant achievement.

Late last year, the United States placed YMTC and 21 other Chinese chipmakers on a sanctions list to cut off their access to emerging technologies.

At that time, YMTC was doing its best to become a strong competitor to Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron (the giants of the memory industry) through the 232-layer X3-9070 memory. With the beginning of massive sanctions, the mass production of the memory in question was greatly hampered.

The claim of making advanced YMTC chip was first made two months ago in a Chinese media, but no one took that report seriously. At the time, YMTC was said to be trying to build its new memory entirely with Chinese devices. TechInsights has not provided any details in this regard.
