China unveiled the world’s first ammonia engine for cars; 90% less pollution

GAC Automobile Group (GAC) in China has produced the world’s first ammonia engine for passenger cars, which is a clean alternative to current engines. Ammonia has been proposed as a clean fuel for ships, planes, trucks and trains, but Gack believes the substance will also play a role in the automotive industry.

Gak produced an experimental combustion engine to investigate the hypothesis of using ammonia in cars. This engine can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 90%.

Ammonia (NH3) sometimes carries hydrogen better than hydrogen. Ammonia is liquid at room temperature and therefore easier to work with. Liquidity means that compression by energy or refrigeration equipment is not required.

According to BloombergAmmonia can be produced without polluting the environment; But today, most of the ammonia is made in processes that pollute the environment.

Ammonia is highly flammable and is considered an “extremely dangerous substance” for humans and many animals. Thus, despite all its advantages, ammonia also has a number of disadvantages. Gasoline and diesel also have many disadvantages.

In many ammonia car projects, companies are trying to break down ammonia and turn it back into hydrogen, releasing a nitrogen atom into the air and using a fuel cell to provide electrical energy; However, other companies use ammonia in modified combustion engines. Gak has taken a similar approach.

Gak says his new two-liter engine can safely and efficiently burn liquid ammonia. Gak claims a maximum output power of 120 kW (161 hp) and a 90% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional fuels.

About a decade ago, researchers at the Energy Research Institute in South Korea produced a car called the AmVeh, which used 70% ammonia and 30% gasoline. That car would reduce carbon emissions by 70%.

Considering that the Gak engine also produces some carbon dioxide, other fuel sources are probably used in it. Using another source is a logical step, because the low emission rate of ammonia flames causes the engine to have problems at high revs.

In order to supply cars equipped with ammonia engine, GAC also struggles with a series of other challenges, the most important of which is the lack of fuel supply infrastructure.
