By 2050, more than one billion people worldwide will have diabetes

In people with diabetes, the body may produce little or no insulin (type 1 diabetes) or not use insulin well (type 2 diabetes). This causes the accumulation of glucose in the blood. Over time, diabetes can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision loss.

About 96% of people with diabetes worldwide in 2021 had type 2 diabetes. The researchers noted that the increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the world is mainly due to the increase in the prevalence of obesity. The continued prevalence of diabetes worldwide will pose a major public health challenge for policymakers, healthcare professionals and patients, the researchers said.
