Qualcomm announced at CES 2023 that it will bring emergency messaging to Android smartphones with its Snapdragon Satellite feature.

Qualcomm mentioned in an official blog that it is working with companies Iridium (Iridium) and Garmin (Garmin) to introduce Snapdragon Satellite. This work, using GPS and satellite communication, provides the possibility of sending two-way SMS in rural areas or areas where there is no mobile phone coverage. Qualcomm also said that the Satellite Emergency SMS feature will be available on select Android devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

According to reports, Samsung will apparently work with the same company, Iridium Communications, to bring the satellite connectivity feature to its Galaxy S23 series. This feature uses the powerful Snapdragon X70 modem and connects to the Iridium satellite system; But for this feature to work, it needs to be activated by manufacturers and service providers.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon satellite can allow you to send messages; But there is a point

Qualcomm showcased Snapdragon Satellite Emergency Texting technology, showing how you can send and receive text messages as well as alert emergency services in locations without cell phone coverage. Just like the iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS feature, you need to be in a location with clear skies and set your phone to a satellite. After successful connection, you will be able to send and receive SMS. Users can send custom messages of 160 characters to a predefined list of contacts to avoid crowding. This is different from Apple’s implementation, where you are limited to typing your messages and selecting contacts.

Qualcomm said devices that ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in the first half of the year won’t have this feature; because they do not have the necessary hardware; But some devices sold in the second half of 2022 will have this feature. Therefore, it is possible that Samsung has been working on a similar feature independently of Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has stated that Snapdragon Satellite can be extended to other devices, including laptops, tablets, vehicles and the Internet of Things.
