We expect this chip, known as the M2 Extreme, to be used in Apple’s next Mac Pro.
After years of speculation about the removal of Intel chips from Apple computers and the use of the company’s exclusive ARM-based system-on-chips, we have seen this transition since 2020; The process that started with the introduction of M1 chip in MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and 24-inch iMac.
The Cupertino-based tech giant also unveiled the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in 2021 and used this system-on-chip in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. In 2022 and following this path, we saw the unveiling of the M1 Ultra, which Apple used for the first time in its new Mac Studio.
In July, Apple started a new cycle by introducing the next generation of its proprietary chips, the M2 series. This system-on-chip was also used in the MacBook Air 2022, and we are expected to see the introduction of new MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips later this month.
According to recent reports, Apple’s best custom system-on-chips don’t stop at the Ultra model, and apparently the company plans to add the M2 Extreme to its flagship chip family.

It is said that according to the plans, the next generation Mac Pro codenamed Jade 2C-Die and Jade 4C-Die will probably be equipped with a chip that will use 20 to 40 central processing cores. Rumors suggest that this system-on-chip will include 32 or 16 cores with high performance and 4 or 8 optimized cores. In addition, it is possible that this chip will come with 64-core or 128-core graphics.
In comparison, the chip used in today’s best Mac Pro models uses a maximum of 28 central processing cores. Apple also plans to use 3nm lithography in the construction of its new system-on-chips in order to embed more transistors in them; However, it is not yet clear when the company’s 3nm chips will be available. According to some reports, it is possible that Apple will use this architecture in making Mac processors before introducing the iPhone 15 series.
The M2 Extreme with 40 or 48 cores is likely to be used in Apple’s upcoming flagship Mac Pro. We expect this device to be officially introduced next year.
