The laptop RAM revolution is coming

It’s time to slowly say goodbye to the SO-DIMM RAM standard; A standard seen in some of the best laptops. Now JEDEC, the global electronics standards body, has approved a new standard that will offer more capacity and less space.

According to JEDEC official announcementThe new module is called CAMM2, and its previous version, which was called CAMM, was first produced by Dell and introduced in the Dell Precision 7670 laptop.

CAMM module found improvements compared to SO-DIMM; But it prevented users from upgrading and replacing RAM, and Dell was the only company that made this memory. With the CAMM2 standard, this type of RAM will become more widespread over time.

CAMM2 will come in two variants, DDR5 and LPDDR5(X), the latter meaning memory with lower power consumption. LPDDR5 RAM allows for upgrades as it is easily removable and replaceable.

The main advantage of CAMM2 over SO-DIMM is that it is thinner. CAMM2 is said to be up to 57% thinner than SO-DIMMs, allowing laptops to have up to 128GB of RAM, well beyond the needs of gaming laptops, and for workstation laptops, it could be a significant improvement.

Large capacity and smaller size are not the only advantages of CAMM2. The frequency of DDR5 laptop RAM may increase to more than 6,400 MHz with the new CAMM2 standard, which makes laptops able to compete with desktop systems in the process of increasing RAM speed.

The most interesting part of the new memory standard is that CAMM2 can enable dual-channel RAM using a single-channel RAM module. Therefore, it can improve memory performance without the need for additional modules.

Although we now have a new standard for RAM, it will take a long time for it to be fully implemented in the laptop market and affect laptop prices. Laptop RAM has a bright future; But the first devices to use the new standard will likely be more expensive due to rising RAM prices.

We will gradually see CAMM2 become more widespread and SO-DIMM removed. This is similar to what is currently happening with DDR4 and DDR5 RAM; Where both exist and are still effective; But DDR5 is more popular and its price is more balanced.
