Nvidia’s DLSS frame generation technology works amazingly with AMD FSR and Intel XeSS

Igor’s lab team was tinkering with Spider-Man Remastered when they noticed that the game’s settings offered strange options such as turning on frame generation without enabling DLSS and pairing this feature with AMD FSR and Intel XeSS.

Igor Labs asked Nvidia directly if these options should be in the game or not. In response, Nvidia confirmed that the mentioned options exist, explaining that the frame generation function is separate from scaling, but added that DLSS 3 is optimized to work with it. The lab in question tested an RTX 4090 to determine what framerates they would achieve without DLSS 3.

to report TechSpotRunning Spider-Man Remastered on a system equipped with RTX 4090 graphics and an Intel Core i9 12900K chip, Igor achieved 4K resolution and a reasonable speed of 125 frames per second. With FSR, DLSS or XeSS enabled, the mentioned game ran at a rate of 135 frames per second. Then, by activating the frame production settings, the execution rate increased to 168 frames per second, and by turning on DLSS and FSR, it again reached about 220 frames per second. XeSS performed slightly slower than the competition and achieved a rate of 204 frames per second.

Igor’s lab also investigated the effect of frame production with other quality settings FSR, DLSS and XeSS, and the conditions remained the same. Frame production in all three modes significantly increased the frame rate, but DLSS and FSR outperformed XeSS by a large margin, and this is still the case on non-Intel systems.

XeSS was still trying to reach the visual quality level of DLSS and FSR. And in fact, the difference between DLSS and FSR is more related to the taste of gamers. FSR seems to have slightly more resolution, but DLSS produces fewer artifacts. XeSS also presented more tarnished images than its competitors and faced problems in managing AntiAliasing.

There are speculations that FSR 3 will use frames that are implemented in a similar way to Nvidia’s approach, and that compatibility will be very broad. Now we have to see if this technology works with DLSS and XeSS or not. FSR will arrive in the next 3 years and then we will know which tool will provide the best results.
