Microsoft in official document Jadidi says that those Surface family laptops that were launched on or after January 1, 2021, will receive the latest drivers and firmware updates for at least 6 years.
Microsoft has previously said that all Surfaces will receive new updates for at least four years after launch.
The new change means that products like the Surface Pro 7 Plus, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Go 3 and new members of Microsoft’s laptop family introduced this year will be supported for at least 6 years.
6-year support is a positive move from Microsoft, but Redmondi’s performance is weaker than Google’s in this area. Google said some time ago that Chromebooks from 2021 onwards will be automatically updated for up to 10 years.
Changing Surface update policies is done while Panos Panaythe former head of Windows and Surface, left Microsoft late this summer to join Amazon.
