This artificial intelligence-based robotic fish helps preserve marine ecosystems

Swiss researchers have invented a new, autonomous robotic fish that could provide a clearer picture of undersea creatures. This robot does not cause any disturbance to the environment while performing its missions.

The Swiss robotic fish is called Belle, and it is specifically designed to collect valuable data with non-invasive methods. Leon Guggenheimstudent of mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, told Reuters: “We want to investigate the actual behavior of ecosystems.”

According to Guggenheim, Belle is a silent robot that moves like a fish and does not disturb the surrounding environment while swimming.

Robert Katzshman, assistant professor of robotics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, said: “Marine ecosystems are vulnerable to systems that use motors equipped with rotating propellers; because they cause the corals to crumble or scare the fishes.”

The dimensions of this robot are less than one meter and its weight is approximately 10 kg, and it moves inside with hollow silicone fins and water pumping.

Cavities built into the Belle are filled and deflated by a water pump system, which moves the fins back and forth. The goal of the researchers is that the robot fish can operate independently for two hours with each full charge.

“Belle swims up to the surface and sends us a GPS signal,” Guggenheim says. Then, with the received data, we go to the stop of this robot and pick it up again. Having Belle send data to researchers seems like an interesting idea; But as the missions get longer, the batteries and the DNA filter need to be replaced.”

The Swiss research team hopes their robotic fish will help marine biologists more closely study the health and diversity of different reef ecosystems.
