GM is hiring Qualcomm to build the car

General Motors will introduce its Ultra Cruise system for the first time in the 2024 (1403) Cadillac Celestial electric sedan. Ultra Cruise will be the first advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) to use Qualcomm’s Snapdargon Ride platform. The size of this system is equivalent to “two laptops side by side” and its processing power will be equivalent to “several hundred” personal computers.

General Motors first introduced 2021 (1400) at the Ultra Cruise event, describing it as a major improvement over the company’s Super Cruise system.

According to Verge, the Super Cruise system enabled automatic driving on mapped and segmented highways; But at the time of launch, the Ultra Cruise system will be able to cover 95% of the driving routes on US roads.

Jason Dittmann, a senior engineer at General Motors, spoke about the auto-driving capability of the company’s future vehicles:

With this feature, we try to completely eliminate the need for the driver to drive, and when the car enters the road, the Ultra Cruise system is activated automatically, and most activities such as reacting to traffic lights and traffic signs, turning the road, entering the freeway, etc. Do not interfere with the driver. This will be possible thanks to Qualcomm’s new powerful processors.


Qualcomm signed a deal with General Motors last year to supply computer chips for next-generation electric vehicles.

As a result of this agreement, Cadillac Celestial will be one of the first vehicles to be equipped with the new Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) platform at launch. The platform will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SA8540P chip system and the SA9000P AI accelerator.

According to General Motors, the two chips enable control functions on 16-core processors with low latency, and perform advanced AI calculations of more than 300 TOPS (tera operation per second) to process camera, radar and slider performance.

The most important advantage of using these two chips is that they provide a lot of space for the automaker.

Dittmann said:

These two chips will provide us with efficient space and help us to move the previous modules in the cars to an independent space. This reduces system latency by removing the previous control area network (CAN).

Dittmann said about the sensors used in this platform:

The Ultra Cruise system uses sensors such as a camera, radar and sidebar to control the steering, acceleration and braking of the car and relies on a total of 20 different devices.

Despite the advanced capabilities of this platform, General Motors still considers Ultra Cruise, as defined by the Association of Automotive Engineers, a level 2 system that can control steering, acceleration, deceleration, blind spots and diversion; But still in all these activities it is necessary for the driver to be alert and monitor the route. The car’s infrared sensors detect the driver’s inattention, and the system sends several warnings to the driver before clearing.
