Filtering has not reduced the presence of Iranian users on Instagram
60% of all internet users in the world are members of social networks. In Iran, 54% of people are members and present in various social networks. The strong presence of people on these platforms has made social networks an important space. Today, these networks are both an important platform for businesses and a part of people’s entertainment and interactions, and also, they are a space to get news, information and various trainings.
Considering the importance of social networks, studying them and examining the behavior of their users can provide interesting points. Datac has published its annual report in 1401 with the aim of obtaining information about the behavior of Iranian users of social networks. In this report, various social networks, including Instagram, Telegram and Twitter, have been examined and important points have been obtained about the activities of users on these platforms in the past year.
According to the findings of Datac, Iranian users still have a strong presence in social networks despite all the restrictions that exist for the Internet and social networks. Datak’s findings show that by the end of 1401, about 58 to 61 million Iranians were Telegram users. Instagram has 42 to 46 million Iranian users and about four million Iranian users are active on Twitter. Of course, this number is not the number of unique users and is the total number of accounts that Iranians have activated in these networks.
Filtering did not oppose the presence and activity of Iranians
In 1401, a total of 690 million posts were published out of 530 thousand active Iranian channels in Telegram. Datak’s report on the level of activity of Iranian users on Instagram states: “Many Iranian users thought that with Instagram filtering, this social network, like Facebook, would be removed from the ranking of popular Iranian social networks; But datac data shows that after the protests, the volume of public content on this platform increased over time.”
Datak’s findings show that last year, 450 million posts were published on Instagram from 6 million Iranian public accounts, and Iranian users see Instagram posts more than 25,000 times per second. Last year, Iranians published about 233 tweets per second, and 95% of all tweets were retweets and only 5% were first-hand tweets.
The important thing about 1401 was the extensive filtering that was applied, and this restriction still continues on some platforms, such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Google Play, etc. Datak has made an important point by pointing out these limitations.
According to the findings of this report, with the beginning of the 1401 protests and the filtering of Instagram, the amount of posts published on this social network clearly decreased; This decreasing trend continued until the beginning of January 1401.
