Contrary to expectations, Google’s Tensor G2 chip is based on 5nm lithography

When Google unveiled the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, it said that these two phones are equipped with the second-generation Tensor processor, however, it did not reveal the full details of this chip. Tensor G2 was rumored to be based on 4nm lithography, however GSMArena According to the spokesperson of Google, the second generation Tensor uses five nanometer lithography.
Lithography or node processing, which is sometimes referred to as a chip manufacturing process, is a special type of semiconductor manufacturing process. In general, the smaller the lithography number, the smaller transistors are produced with higher power and lower power consumption.
The lithographies of different chip manufacturers such as Samsung and TSMC have differences, and a chip made with Samsung’s 5nm lithography does not perform at the same level as TSMC’s 5nm chip. The A16 processor used in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is based on TSMC’s 4nm lithography.
It is currently unclear whether the second-generation Tensor chip is the same as the pre-lithography model Samsung uses 5LPE or is produced using the newer 5LPP lithography. Google had previously officially announced that the second generation Tensor has two Cortex-X1 cores, two Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores and achieves a higher processing frequency than the first generation Tensor. The new Google chip is equipped with Mali-G710 MC10 graphics unit.
Google also announced that the Tensor processing unit (known as TPU) in the new generation chip consumes less energy than the previous generation and performs camera and machine learning processes 60% faster than the TPU unit in the first generation Tensor.
