Comparison of Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro with the previous generation

Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro, the latest flagships of the Chinese company, have arrived to stand out as direct competitors to the Galaxy S23. Xiaomi has completely changed the design of its phones and this time we see a square camera island on the back panel. The new Qualcomm chip puts significant processing power at the disposal of the users of the Xiaomi 13 series phones, and these devices offer an exciting imaging experience thanks to the high-quality camera.

The design of Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro was largely the same, but in the new generation, the Chinese have produced the standard model with a flat edge similar to the iPhone. Xiaomi 13 Pro has a curved edge. From the front view, the difference between Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 12 is clearly visible. All four compared phones host a circular hole at the top of the display.

The difference between the design of Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 13 is so great that it seems like we are dealing with a new family of Xiaomi phones. This time, the edges of the phone have been flattened to convey a better feeling to the user. Xiaomi has also changed the design of the rear panel camera island. While the Xiaomi 12 used a rectangular island, the Xiaomi 13 has a square island in black, which is not dissimilar to the Google Pixel 5.

Xiaomi has slightly increased the dimensions of the display of the standard model, but this difference is not so noticeable. Xiaomi 13 to the display 6.36 inches AMOLED is equipped with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels.

While the previous Xiaomi phone offered a brightness of 1,100 nits, the Xiaomi 13 achieves a maximum brightness of 1,900 nits (when playing HDR content). Other display specifications such as refresh rate and resolution remain untouched.

Xiaomi 12

Last year, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 12 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This processor performed very well in its time. Xiaomi uses the new 13 generation Qualcomm chip. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been boosted compared to the previous generation to perform heavy processing faster. This chip is not far from the powerful A16 chip and is based on TSMC’s four-nanometer lithography.

One of the notable points is changing the arrangement of cores in the CPU unit. The arrangement of 3+4+1 (one less low-power core) makes Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 more powerful in multi-core processing than the previous generation. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 enables ray tracing support for smartphones to make the visuals of mobile games more realistic. Currently, very few games support this technology, but their number will increase in 2023.

Xiaomi 13, like the previous year’s model, comes with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and has configurations with 128, 256 or 512 GB of storage memory.

Xiaomi 13 is equipped with a triple camera. The main camera has a 50-megapixel sensor and a lens with Hyper OIS support. The second camera is equipped with a Leica telephoto lens with OIS support and a 10-megapixel sensor. This camera offers three times zoom. The ultra-wide camera uses a 12-megapixel sensor and likely won’t offer autofocus.

The Xiaomi 12 used a 50-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera. Xiaomi 13 has experienced significant improvements in the field of imaging.

Like the previous generation, Xiaomi 13 has a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 67W charging technology. Xiaomi phone 12 was released with MIUI 13 based on Android 12 operating system, but Xiaomi 13 is released with MIUI 14 based on Android 13. MIUI 14 is smoother, slimmer and lighter than the previous generation, allowing users to remove more default apps.

Xiaomi 12 was launched in four colors, however Xiaomi 13 is available in nine different colors. The color variety of Xiaomi 13 is amazing. The Xiaomi 12 was launched in the base configuration for 3,699 yuan ($531), but the Xiaomi 13 is available for 3,999 yuan ($575).

Xiaomi 13 Pro vs Xiaomi 12 Pro

The difference between the body of Xiaomi 13 Pro and Xiaomi 12 Pro is less than the standard models. Here too, the camera island has changed, but the edges of the device have not been flattened. On the other hand, the display of Xiaomi 13 Pro has not changed much compared to Xiaomi 12 Pro. We are still on the side of the 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED panel, which has a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels. The biggest change is the increase in brightness to 1,900 nits.

What we said about the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 13 chips also applies to the Pro models. Xiaomi 13 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor to challenge the most powerful phones on the market. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the best processor in the world of Android, but it is not considered the best processor in the mobile industry.

We still don’t see any significant change in RAM capacity and storage capacity, however Xiaomi 13 Pro uses LPDDR5x RAM and faster UFS 4.0 storage memory and is actually a faster device.

The most important feature of Xiaomi 13 Pro is the camera. The main camera uses a one-inch Sony IMX989 sensor with a resolution of 50 megapixels. This sensor has 1.6 micron pixels and uses f/1.9 lens made by Leica. Xiaomi says that the lens in question is equipped with the Hyper OIS system for image stabilization.

The telephoto camera of Xiaomi 13 Pro has also experienced a significant improvement. The telephoto camera has a 50-megapixel sensor and uses a lens with a floating element. This system consists of an internal group of lens elements, one of which moves forward and backward along the horizontal axis, and the focal length changes as this element moves. The floating system is inspired by a similar design used in high-end SLR cameras.

Xiaomi 12 Pro

Xiaomi says that in the process of capturing a photo, the floating lens moves forward to provide “infinite focus distance”. The telephoto camera also has the ability to record macro images (close-up photography). In this mode, the floating lens moves back so that you can focus on subjects that are 10 cm away.

The ultra-wide camera of the Xiaomi 13 Pro has not experienced many improvements, but it is still considered a high-quality camera. Xiaomi has gone for a 50 megapixel sensor and a 14 mm f/2.2 lens with support for macro photography. This camera supports autofocus.

Xiaomi 12 Pro also had three 50 megapixel cameras on the back panel, but the 50 megapixel cameras in Xiaomi 13 Pro have experienced a significant improvement.

Xiaomi 13 Pro still supports 120W fast charging and its battery has become a bit more powerful. Like other Xiaomi devices, this phone has a USB-C port. Xiaomi 13 Pro comes with MIUI 14 based on Android 13.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro is available for 4,699 yuan ($675), while the Xiaomi 13 Pro carries a price tag of 4,999 yuan ($720).
