The new benchmark attributed to Apple M2 Max shows that the CPU unit of this chip is going to improve by 20% compared to the powerful M1 Max chip. The M2 Max will be used in the new generation of Apple Macs (probably first in the 2023 MacBook Pros).
According to WccftechIn Apple’s new high-end chip, we will see an improvement in the performance of each core and performance per watt. Despite all the improvements, the M2 Max isn’t going to be Apple’s most powerful chip of 2023. The Mac maker is likely to introduce the M2 Ultra chip before the end of next year.
The processor unit in the M2 Max processor will be equipped with 12 cores, while the M1 Max uses 10 cores. It is currently unknown how many of the M2 Max’s 12 cores are high-powered cores. Apple, like many other companies, uses a combination of high-power cores and low-power cores in its chips.
Apple’s new chip has been seen with a base frequency of 3.54 GHz, a boost frequency of 3.7 GHz and four megabytes of L2 cache. The system in which the M2 Max appeared had 96 GB of integrated memory. M2 Max managed to get 1,889 and 14,586 single-core and multi-core scores respectively in Geekbench. In the same benchmark, M1 Max scored 1,750 and 12,200 in single-core and multi-core, respectively.
The comparison of scores shows that the M2 Max processor unit has been strengthened by 10% in the single-core section and 20% in the multi-core section compared to the previous generation. Do not forget that we are still far from the final production of the M2 Max, and it is possible that Apple can further develop this chip.
The M2 Max is unlikely to make it into the Mac Pro desktop system, so the most logical competitors are Intel and AMD laptop processors. The M2 Max’s main competitor is Intel’s yet-to-be-announced 13th generation flagship laptop processor, so let’s take a look at the performance of the 12th generation processor.
The high-end 12th generation Intel Core i9-12900H chip achieved a maximum single-core score of 1,890 and a multi-core score of 12,884 on Geekbench. Thus, Intel’s high-end laptop chip loses against the M2 Max. The extra power of the M2 Max comes while the chip has lower power consumption than its Intel counterpart.
The AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS chip achieves an average single-core score of 1,500 and a multi-core score of 9,500 in Geekbench’s single-core section. This chip also loses against the M2 Max.
Most likely, Apple will focus on energy consumption when unveiling the M2 Max. Apple’s chips are powerful yet very energy-efficient. Meanwhile The M2 Ultra will be more focused on increasing processing power than any other chip in Apple’s history.
