A new discovery by scientists can make burning calories and losing weight easier

In this particular case, when the mice ate less food, a hormone known as growth-differentiating factor 15 (GDF15) prevented their bodies from automatically reducing their energy expenditure and accelerated another metabolic process in their muscles. “We found that in mice, the hormone GDF15 prevents the metabolic slowdown during dieting by increasing the wasteful cycling of calcium in the muscles,” says Gregory Steinberg, a medical scientist at McMaster University in Canada.

Previous research has shown that GDF15 and its related receptor, GFRAL, affect the amount of food that mice eat. Now researchers think it can help maintain weight loss long-term.

More investigations are needed to analyze the mechanisms involved in the pathway described in the new study. Future research should also show that GDF15 works the same way in humans; But the results have been quite promising.

With obesity expected to affect around one billion people worldwide by 2030 and leading to problems such as type 2 diabetes, it is clear that new strategies are needed to bring people’s weight back into a healthy range. “Our study shows the potential of the hormone GDF15 not only to reduce the desire to eat fatty foods, but also to increase energy burning in muscles,” says Steinberg.

We may also be able to combine GDF15 with existing drugs and find more effective treatments for appetite suppression, or develop drugs that can benefit people for whom dieting is not successful.
