Pitcher plants usually eat moths and flies, but researchers at the Algonquin Wildlife Research Station recently discovered a surprising new item on the plant’s menu: young spotted salamanders.
As Samantha followed the researchers on their daily survey, she spotted a potted plant with two salamanders floating on the surface of the liquid inside. Both salamanders were in the same stage of decay. He says he knew this scene was a special and fleeting moment. The next day, both salamanders had sunk to the bottom of the plant and drowned.
